M.D.Mahindapala started his carrier as a still photographer before joining The Government Film Unit of Sri Lanka as an apprentice to the camera department in the year 1973. He was trained under German documentary film maker Paul Zils and film cameramen like Veteran Vincent Perera,Sanath Liyanage,Leo Wickramaratne,Wimal Perera,Rowland B Perera and Keerthi Sri Perera ,until he became a fully fledged cameraman.He has worked with directors such as award winning documentary film maker P.Hettiarachchi, Wilfred Perera,Tissa Liyanasuriya,Tissa Abeysekera,Sugathapala Senerath Yapa,Ranjith Lal and Sumithra Peris on various documentary topics.
He was a member of the first batch of trainees sent to NHK Japan in 1981 before the commencement of National Television Corporation (Rupavahini) in Sri Lanka. He joined the National TV Coorporation as a Senior Cameraman in 1982. Gamperaliya,Kada Ima, Somage Sihinaya,Sandaka Kathawak and Pitagamkarayo were some of the well known Television dramas he worked as the cameraman.
He joined the Sri Lanka Television Training Institute in 1990 as a training Coordinator until he retired from the institute as the Manager Training in 2006. He has undergone advance training in Germany,Japan,Malaysia and Pakistan.
Mahindapala has photographed several theatrical feature films including Anantha Rathriya,Purahanda Kaluwara,Ira Madiyama,Akasa Kusum,Obanathuwa Oba Ekka,Tharanaya,Udugam Yamaya,Mage Wamatha and Dakala Prudu Kenek.
He has receiceived The Presidential Award,Sarasavi,Unda,Sumathi and Signis awards for his work, on numerous occasions. He is a Diploma holder in Photography from the University of Colombo and has been working as a film and TV trainer and a lecturer since 1984.
He is the author of several books and articles.
